It's Monday! What are you reading? From Picture Books to YA

Week 19 of It's Monday! What are you reading? was better than the last few weeks, to say the least! I am getting back into the swing of things by reading picture books to plan for the following week's read alouds, and I'm making a promise to myself that I will always have at least one chapter book on my nightstand that's actually being read.

The kids at my school are checking out new books left and right and requesting all of the books they see behind my counter that I'm still cataloging. It's wonderful that they're so eager to check out more books, but it's added pressure on me to get going on cataloging & covering ... and I'm so S-L-O-W! It certainly doesn't help when I stop to read all of the new picture books!

It's Monday! What are you reading? From Picture Books to YA

Week 18 of It's Monday! What are you reading? was a pathetic reading week. Uh, can I just say it was because it was the first week of school for both of my kids? That's an acceptable excuse, right? Besides not getting to read many picture books, I didn't finish The Unwanteds ... in the end I didn't even get to choose not to read it; it was due back at the library and I couldn't renew it. I think that's going to end up being a book I'll never finish but I'll get for my library anyway.

Al righty then, let's just move on, shall we? I'm going to focus on Week 19 and pretend like Week 18 didn't happen.

WHAT I READ LAST WEEK:

Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin

Good News, Bad News by Jeff Mack

Read It, Don't Eat It! by Ian Schoenherr

WHAT I'M READING NOW:

The Assassin and the Pirate Lord (Throne of Glass #0.1) by Sarah J. Maas

It's Monday! What are you reading? From Picture Books to YA

Week 17 of It's Monday! What are you reading? was a transition week of sorts. It was the first week back at work for me -- I only saw kindergarteners -- but it was a week that's sandwiched between two three-day weekends. Work week = reading for class visits. Three-day weekends = reading for fun. Sadly, not enough of the former actually took place, probably because I only had to see one grade level.

I'm also still struggling through The Unwanteds for some reason. It came highly recommended by an employee of Mrs. Nelson's and my son plowed through it quickly. And it's not that it's a bad book: the premise is great (kind of a cross between Harry Potter and The Giver), the world building is interesting, and the writing is fine. I can't seem to pinpoint what it is that's holding me back from finishing it. I have a sneaking suspicion that it's the characters I'm not fond of, but I'm not 100% sure about that yet. Anyway, I feel like I should finish it because it's the kind of book that I think the kids at my school would enjoy (we're big on fantasy/magic), but I'm not clamoring to get back to it. Dear reader, what do you do in a case like this?

And if I can't decide whether to finish reading The Unwanteds it's no surprise that I can't decide what else I plan to read this coming week. I'm wavering between finishing the CYRM Intermediate nominees, ARCs I picked up at ALA, graphic novel digital ARCs from NetGalley, and new books I bought over the summer for my library. Too many choices! Help?

WHAT I READ LAST WEEK:

Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray

Throne of the Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard

Relish by Lucy Knisley
(digital ARC from NetGalley; publication date April 2, 2013)

WHAT I'M (STILL) READING NOW ... AND MAY NEVER FINISH:

The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann

Dear Miss Breed: True Stories of the Japanese American Incarceration During World War II and a Librarian Who Made a Difference by Joanne Oppenheim

WHAT I PLAN TO READ THIS WEEK:
Can you help me decide? Please leave a comment if you'd recommend any of the following. Thanks!
