It's Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA

Oh, library, how I love thee! I really don't know what I would do without libraries. This week, I spent some extra time at the Arlington Central Library after the Capitol Choices meeting to browse the collection and find something to check out. It's really helpful when there are a lot of books on display face out. I don't deny that I'm a "judge a book by its cover" kinda gal, and a well-designed cover will get me every time. I'm also trying to catch up with some CapChoices books ... I'm already falling behind!

[To rehash the concept :: post what you read last week, what you're reading now, and what you plan to read this week. If you have a review of the book(s), great! If you have a picture of the book(s), wonderful! If you have a book giveaway, fantastic! If you just list the title(s) of the book(s), not a problem! Make it as simple or as complex as you need it to be. At least, that's the message I got. It's Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA

It doesn't look like I read much, but I actually read some "grown up" books this week, including six mature-themed graphic novels I got access to through netgalley (you can see them at my goodreads Reading Challenge page). I also wasn't able to go to the library last week so my picture book selection was kinda slim. I hope to remedy that this week.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA

OK, excuse time: My mom -- and then my younger sister and her boyfriend -- came to visit from California, so I've been concentrating on spending my free time with them instead of reading.

That said, I couldn't help but pick up a few books from the library last week that appealed to my interest in multicultural children's literature. This may seem almost silly, but I really like being introduced to new things through children's books. I'm more of a Jack-of-All-Trades kind of person, so I like to learn things across a wide variety of topics, and reading shorter children's books helps me to do that. If I find something in particular I'm really interested in, I can then find more books and resources. This week's selection was particularly good for learning about the Choctaw Nation (Crossing Bok Chitto by Tim Tingle) and their relationship with African American slaves.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA

I'm slowly but surely catching up with my reading. The library books on the living room shelf aren't staring back at me, making me feel guilty that I haven't read them in a long time. Life is good!

And I'm pretty happy with the variety of books I read this past week. I made an effort to read the netgalley books that I downloaded, even if the publication date has already passed. Not only do I need to keep up with and find new books to read for Capitol Choices, but with my very limited budget right now, being able to take advantage of the free books through netgalley is a blessing. Can't let that go to waste!
